Description

Adafruit VCNL4040 Proximity and Lux Sensor features a proximity sensor that works from 0mm to 200mm and a light sensor ranging from 0.0125lux to 6553lux. This sensor is placed on a breakout board with support circuitry that allows the board to be used with 5V (Arduino/ Metro328) or 3.3V (Feather/Raspberry Pi) logic levels. The VCNL4040 proximity and lux sensor use an I2C interface to seamlessly connect it up with two wires (plus power and ground). This sensor includes the SparkFun qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors for the I2C bus.

The VCNL4040 proximity and lux sensor are capable of adjusting the integration time to set the sensitivity of measurements depending on the lighting conditions. This sensor collects measurements for a short period of time and with an integration time of 80ms, each measurement bit of light represents a larger amount of light. If the integration time is increased, then the sensitivity and resolution within the measurement range also increase.

The VCNL4040 proximity and lux sensor are also capable of changing the current and duty cycle of the IR LED that powers the proximity detection to adjust how sensitive proximity measurements are.

Basic breakout board for the TEMT6000 Ambient Light Sensor. TEMT6000 is a silicon NPN epitaxial planar phototransistor in a miniature transparent mold for surface mounting onto a printed circuit board. The device is sensitive to the visible spectrum. Only what you need, nothing you don’t. Sensor acts like a transistor – the greater the incoming light, the higher the analog voltage on the signal pin.

Applications:
  1. Ambient light sensor for display backlight dimming in:
  2. Mobile phones
  3. Notebook computers
  4. PDA’s
  5. Cameras
  6. Dashboards

Package Includes:

1 x SparkFun Ambient Light Sensor Breakout – TEMT6000

LightRanger 10 Click as its foundation uses the VL53L4CX, a ToF (Time-of-Flight) optical distance sensor with an extended target detection range from STMicroelectronics. This ToF sensor integrates a VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser), which emits an entirely invisible 940nm IR light, totally safe for eyes (Class 1 certification), and a SPAD (single-photon avalanche diode) array which helps the VL53L4CX to achieve the best ranging performance even when a Click board™ is hidden behind a wide range of cover glass materials. Specifically designed for long-range and multi-target measurements, the VL53L4CX provides very accurate distance measurements up to 6m with excellent results over short distances and 18° FoV (Field of View), which improves performances under ambient light. Thanks to ST’s patented algorithms, the VL53L4CX can detect multiple objects within the FoV with depth understanding. ST histogram algorithms ensure cover glass crosstalk immunity beyond 80cm and dynamic smudge compensation for targets below 80cm. Like all Time-of-Flight sensors based on ST’s FlightSense technology, the VL53L4CX records an absolute distance measurement regardless of the target color and reflectance.

LightRanger 10 Click communicates with MCU using the standard I2C 2-Wire interface to read data and configure settings with a maximum clock frequency of 1MHz. This Click board™ can be enabled or disabled through the EN pin routed to the CS pin of the mikroBUS™ socket; hence, offering a switch operation to turn ON the initial boot sequence of the VL53L4CX. It also possesses an additional interrupt pin, routed to the INT pin on the mikroBUS™ socket, indicating when a ranging measurement is available.

This Click board™ can be operated only with a 3.3V logic voltage level. The board must perform appropriate logic voltage level conversion before using MCUs with different logic levels. However, the Click board™ comes equipped with a library containing functions and an example code that can be used, as a reference, for further development.

Applications: Can be used for presence (object) detection, distance measurement, industrial ranging, inventory control, and more

The TSL2591 luminosity sensor is an advanced digital light sensor, ideal for use in a wide range of light situations. Compared to low-cost CdS cells, this sensor is more precise, allowing for exact lux calculations, and can be configured for different gain/timing ranges to detect light ranges from 188u lux up to 88,000 Lux on the fly.

The best part of this sensor is that it contains both infrared and full spectrum diodes! That means you can separately measure infrared, full-spectrum, or human-visible light. Most sensors can only detect one or the other, which does not accurately represent what human eyes see (since we cannot perceive the IR light that is detected by most photo diodes) This sensor is much like the TSL2561 but with a wider range (and the interface code is different). This sensor has a massive 600,000,000:1 dynamic range! Unlike the TSL2561 you cannot change the I2C address, so keep that in mind.

The built-in ADC means you can use this with any microcontroller, even if it doesn’t have analog inputs. The current draw is extremely low, so it’s great for low-power data-logging systems. about 0.4mA when actively sensing, and less than 5 uA when in power-down mode.

As if that weren’t enough, we’ve also added SparkFun qwiic compatible STEMMA QT connectors for the I2C bus so you don’t even need to solder. Just wire up to your favorite micro with a plug-and-play cable to get data ASAP. For a no-solder experience, just wire up to your favorite micro using a STEMMA QT adapter cable. The Stemma QT connectors also mean the TSL2591 can be used with our various associated accessories. QT Cable is not included, but we have a variety in the shop.

The SparkFun Proximity Sensor Breakout is a simple IR presence and ambient light sensor utilizing the VCNL4040. This type of sensor is often seen in the automatic towel and soap dispensers or automatic faucets.

With the ability to detect objects qualitatively up to 20cm away, you will be able to detect if something is there and if it is closer or further away since the last reading.

Utilizing our handy Qwiic system, no soldering is required to connect it to the rest of your system. However, we still have broken out 0.1″-spaced pins in case you prefer to use a breadboard.

The SparkFun Proximity Sensor Breakout is a great digital alternative to the popular analog-based Sharp sensors. The VCNL4040 has no dead zone and can read all the way up to the face of the sensor. This sensor also has an ambient light sensor built in it which is excellent if you need a digital light sensor for your next glitter cannon.

Features:

  1. Integrated modules: the infrared emitter (IRED), ambient light sensor (ALS), proximity sensor (PS), and signal conditioning IC
  2. Operates ALS and PS in parallel structure
  3. FiltronTM technology adoption for robust background light cancellation
  4. Low power consumption I2C (SMBus compatible) interface
  5. Floor life: 168 h, MSL 3, according to J-STD-020
  6. No Dead Zone
