Description

Digital module with an optical sensor, with a gap of 6 mm. The module has a built-in comparator, because of this, the output is a digital signal. Supply voltage is from 3.3 V to 5 V. Together with the disc of the encoder, it can be used as a device counting the pulses, etc.
The sensor has a digital output that is to be attached to the pin of the microcontroller, e.g.Arduino. After power-up, at the outputs will be logical statuses 0 or 1.

Knob in the form of an encoder with a button that allows you to create a simple user interface. The module sends a digital signal on the SIA and SIB pins, depending on the direction of rotation. It works with voltages from 3 V to 5.3 V.

The sensor has a 5 pin connector with digital outputs SIA, SIB and SW to be attached to the pin of the microcontroller, e.g. Arduino.

Operating principle:
Incremental encoder is a kind of rotation sensor for translating the rotary displacement into a sequential of digital pulse signal. The displacement can be gained by counting the number of the pluses outputted in the course of clockwise or anticlockwise rotation. Comparing with the potentiometer, the rotary counter has no limit for counting. So, there is a reset button provided to
reset the counter to the initial state, restarting at 0

Opto Encoder click is a linear incremental optical sensor/encoder click that can be used for the movement or rotation encoding. Encoders of this type are widely used for many applications, which involve precise detection of the position, speed, or rotational angle of an object. Rotary encoders are often used for various types of controllers on many different devices. Whether it be a rotary encoder knob controller or an angle encoder on a motor shaft, the principle is the same – it includes an optical sensor, just like the one found on the Opto Encoder click.

This Click board™ features an optical sensor in a tall dome design, which allows more physical space, even for a vertical signal encoding. It can be used as an optical sensor in automotive applications, motion, speed, and direction sensors, for precise motor shaft positioning applications, knob encoder applications, and similar applications, where dual channel optical sensing can be utilized.

How Does It Work?

The optical sensor used on the Opto Encoder click is the TCUT1600X01, a tall dome dual channel transmissive optical sensor with phototransistor outputs from Vishay. This sensor is equipped with one infrared LED with a wavelength of 950nm and two phototransistors. These phototransistors are positioned behind two small slits on the sensor, on the opposite side of the LED. They form two separate channels. When the transistors get illuminated by the LED, they become conductive. The collectors of these transistors are connected to the same pin, while their emitters are routed to two separate output pins of the TCUT1600X01 – E1 and E2. This allows the activity on both channels to be detected by the host MCU.

Overview:

Provided Click board library offers easy-to-use functions that can be used to get the encoder position. The provided example application demonstrates the usage of these functions and can be used for further custom development.

An INDEX PULSE is a digital signal generated from an incremental encoder on an individual output channel, once per revolution. This unique pulse may be used for several purposes: In conjunction with a counter, it can be used to track the total number of shaft rotations This type of encoder outputs a pulse string in response to the amount of rotational displacement of the shaft. A separate counter counts the number of output pulses to determine the amount of rotation based on the count

Note:

  1. Consider Adding Pull up resistor to All A-B-Z phase of the encoder output to avoid the effect of interference in output and get the precise logical output value from encoder
  2. Also adding pull up resistor to all phase output line protects the open collector output-triode from damage due to direct Vcc supply short circuit.

This looks like a potentiometer, but it’s an encoder switch.

It is a cascadable 360 ° rotary encoder switch with 20 pulses per revolution, and each pulse corresponds to a detent. There are LED lights set for each detent to allow users visually check the real-time status of the encoder.

For ease of use, the module is designed with I2C data output and configurable accuracy within 1~51 for every detent (set in the program). For instance, when it is set to 1, turn on one LED light by rotating 2.5 revolutions; when set to 51, then one LED light can be switched on by rotating one detent.

In order to apply to more scenarios, the encoder is equipped with a cascade function that enables to control of multiple output devices by occupying only one I2C interface, such as, simultaneously controlling light brightness, color, volume, speed, etc.
